Water Leak Detection & Investigation

Identify where water is entering before repairs begin

From $500 + GST

Thermal imaging, Acoustic detection & written report included

Water appearing somewhere in your home can be confusing and stressful.

The place where water becomes visible is often not where it first entered the building.

In many homes, water can travel through walls, ceilings, balconies, window frames, roof structures, and cavities before it finally appears inside.

This is why identifying the true source of the problem is the most important first step.

In many cases, finding where water is actually entering the home requires a careful investigation.

If You’re Unsure Where Water Is Entering Your Home, A Professional Water Leak Investigation Can Help Identify The Source Before Repairs begin.

How Water Leak Detection Works in Homes

When water appears somewhere in your home, the first step in water leak detection is to carefully listen and understand exactly what has been happening.

From there, the next step is to examine your home using experience and a strong understanding of how homes are built. Construction knowledge helps determine where water is most likely entering the structure and how it may be travelling through the building.

The information you provide often reveals important clues about where the water may be entering and where the investigation should begin.

Modern leak detection tools may sometimes assist during the investigation.

However, most water leaks are ultimately identified through building knowledge, careful observation, and a structured investigation process.

A Smarter Approach to Water Leak Detection

Many leak detection companies rely heavily on electronic equipment such as thermal cameras, moisture meters, and acoustic listening devices.

Dave Wilkinson approaches water leak detection differently.

The investigation is guided first by construction knowledge and understanding how homes are built. By examining the structure of the home and how different building elements connect together, it becomes possible to identify where water is most likely entering the building.

Modern leak detection tools are still used when appropriate and can assist the investigation. However, they are used as supporting tools, not the primary method of finding the leak.

This combination of construction experience, structured investigation, and modern leak detection tools helps accurately identify where water is entering a home and how it is travelling through the structure.

These tools can sometimes help identify areas where moisture is present.

However, these tools often show where water currently exists, not necessarily where the water originally entered the building.

Water can travel through framing, cavities, insulation, pipes and structural elements before becoming visible. Because of this, the source of the leak may be several metres away from where moisture is detected.

When you contact me, you’re usually trying to make sense of what’s happening.

Something has started happening in your home that doesn’t make sense — water appearing in places where it shouldn’t be.

My role is to carefully investigate the situation and identify where the water is actually entering the building.

Meet Dave

How Did Dave Wilkinson Get Involved In Water Leak Investigation?

I started working in the building and construction industry, working closely with homeowners through renovation and construction projects.

During that time, something became very clear. Before renovations or construction work could move forward, it was often necessary to first understand what was happening inside the structure of the home.

Water problems were one of the most common situations where this occurred.

In many cases, homeowners had already spoken with several people trying to locate the source of the issue. Water might appear on a ceiling, inside a wall, or around a window, but the true cause was often difficult to identify.

Because of his background in construction and renovations, Dave was able to approach these situations differently. Instead of focusing only on the visible damage, I look at how your home is built and how water may be travelling through the structure.

By understanding how building elements connect together — such as roofing systems, balconies, windows, flashing and structural framing — it often became possible to trace the problem back to where the water was actually entering the building.

Over time, these investigations became a regular part of helping homeowners move forward with their projects

What Do You Focus On When You’re Helping Someone With a Water Problem?

Once the source of the problem has been located, homeowners can then clearly understand what the next steps are and what repairs may be required.

The goal is not simply to look at where the damage appears, but to find the true cause of the problem so that the correct repair approach can be taken.
